Elon Musk Says Boring Company Is Working on 200+ MPH Austin-to-San Antonio Tunnel

 Elon Musk says The Boring Company is working on a tunnel that would connect Austin and San Antonio at speeds above 200 mph.

If the company can pull off the numbers Musk posted Sunday, it would turn one of Texas’ most aggravating drives into something closer to a quick commuter run.

Musk described the project as a “simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel” and said it could make the trip in less than 30 minutes on a consistent basis.

That is an audacious target even by Musk’s standards.

The downtowns are roughly 80 miles apart by road. A vehicle averaging 200 mph would cover that distance in about 24 minutes before accounting for acceleration, braking and station time.

In other words, the speed and travel-time claims line up mathematically. Building and operating the system is the real test.

The Austin-San Antonio corridor has a very real transportation problem to solve.

The Texas Department of Transportation calls Interstate 35 the main connector between the two regions. TxDOT says population growth is expected to increase congestion and travel delays, while opportunities to expand or improve I-35 are limited.

The agency’s Capital-Alamo Connections Study was created to look beyond a simple highway expansion. It considers infrastructure, policy and technology options across a 12-county region as Austin and San Antonio continue growing toward each other.

The study covers Bastrop, Bexar, Burnet, Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe, Hays, Kendall, Travis and Williamson counties, along with Blanco and Wilson counties. TxDOT developed it with the Capital Area and Alamo Area metropolitan planning organizations so the two ends of the corridor would not be planning in isolation.

Its stated goal is a regional transportation strategy with short- and long-term improvements, not one silver bullet. That context helps explain why Musk’s promise lands so hard: Texas has already concluded that the existing north-south network cannot simply absorb endless growth through ordinary widening projects.

Anyone who has watched I-35 turn into a parking lot knows why a reliable sub-30-minute alternative would get attention.

The numbers drew attention immediately:

The company itself then added a detail that changes how riders should picture the trip: this would be an express system tied to Loop stations on both ends.

That station caveat is not a footnote. The route only delivers the promised door-to-door advantage if its terminals connect places people actually need to reach.

The word “precursor” matters here.

The Boring Company describes its full Hyperloop concept as an ultra-high-speed public transportation system using autonomous electric pods inside low-pressure tunnels, with a long-term vision of speeds above 600 mph for passengers traveling between distant destinations.

The company completed a short Hyperloop test tunnel in Bastrop, Texas, in 2022 to test vacuum pump systems. It also points to four student pod competitions in which the fastest student-built pod reached 288 mph.

Those competitions ran from 2015 through 2019 on a one-mile SpaceX test track built as a prototype for both pod development and automated construction methods. They gave teams a controlled environment to test pieces of the larger idea.

No commercial passenger line came out of those competitions.

The distinction is important. The company has demonstrated test infrastructure and very fast small-scale pods; it has not shown the public an 80-mile passenger system carrying people between two cities at 200 mph.

Musk’s new statement puts a specific corridor and travel target on a concept that has spent years in the testing phase.

The official project page still labels the Bastrop facility as a test track that is complete and in use.

A 200-plus-mph Austin-to-San Antonio line would therefore sit well below the company’s ultimate Hyperloop vision while still exceeding conventional highway speeds by a wide margin.

The Boring Company is not starting from zero on tunneling, either.

Its research-and-development project page lists seven completed test tunnels in three cities. The company says its 1.14-mile Hawthorne track has supported Loop testing at speeds up to 140 mph, while multiple Bastrop tunnels are being used to test boring-machine and Hyperloop systems.

One Bastrop tunnel is being used for Hyperloop testing after The Boring Company demonstrated a retrieval method that let its machine emerge without a conventional pit or crane. Another tested continuous mining with no people inside the tunnel during normal operations.

A third was later converted into a 500-foot pedestrian connection between SpaceX and Hyperloop Plaza.

The company also operates passenger tunnels in Las Vegas. Those routes are shorter urban connections running at ordinary vehicle speeds, a different engineering challenge from a 200-mph intercity line.

Even so, they show that The Boring Company has progressed from drawings and test holes to a transportation system carrying paying passengers.

Then there is the question of how fast the tunnel itself could be built.

The company’s Prufrock tunneling page says its latest machines are targeting one mile per week and an all-in Loop transportation tunnel cost below $5 million per mile. Those are company-wide goals, not a disclosed schedule or budget for this project.

Prufrock is designed to launch from the surface, mine while installing tunnel lining, and emerge onto a trailer at the other end. The company says that approach avoids the large launch and retrieval pits that make conventional tunneling slower and more expensive.

The same page says the machines are remotely controlled from a Bastrop operations center and use a standardized tunnel design across different projects. If an Austin-San Antonio line advances, those systems would be central to the economics.

The corridor is long enough that a small difference in weekly progress or cost per mile would compound quickly.

Musk’s announcement did not identify the route, stations, tunnel length, construction start, completion date, passenger capacity, financing plan or permitting status.

He also did not explain exactly what would make this “precursor” system different from the company’s 600-plus-mph Hyperloop concept.

Those unanswered questions are enormous. An intercity tunnel would need to cross multiple jurisdictions, handle emergency access and ventilation, connect useful destinations on both ends, and prove that passengers can be moved safely at the advertised speed.

Still, the biggest change in Musk’s wording is easy to miss.

This was not another suggestion that an Austin-San Antonio demonstration “would be cool.” Musk said The Boring Company is working on it.

Now Texas gets to find out how much work that sentence represents.
