Donald Trump has signaled tight message control for his incoming administration following the ongoing controversy regarding Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s stance on H1B visas.
The president-elect has imposed strict social media restrictions on his cabinet nominees, requiring them to obtain approval before posting on any platform.
The directive, delivered through a memo from Trump’s chief of staff Susie Wiles, comes amid growing tensions within the MAGA movement over immigration policy and as confirmation battles loom on Capitol Hill.
“While this instruction has been delivered previously, I am reiterating that no member of the incoming administration or Transition speaks for the United States or the President-elect himself,” Wiles wrote in the memo obtained by the New York Post.
The message emphasized that nominees must seek clearance from incoming White House counsel before making any public social media posts.
The timing of this crackdown appears linked to recent internal conflicts, particularly a heated debate over skilled worker visas that exposed rifts within Trump’s coalition.
The controversy erupted when Tesla CEO Musk, tapped to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), defended the H-1B visa program and threatened to “go to war” with MAGA Republicans who opposed his stance.
Trump ultimately aligned himself with Musk’s position, supporting the use of visas for skilled foreign workers – a stance that represents a significant shift from his previous criticism of the H-1B program.
“I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas,” Trump stated in a recent interview, as outlined by Resist the Mainstream. “That’s why we have them.”
“I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B,” he added. “I have used it many times. It’s a great program,”
Daily Mail reported that during his first term, Trump had labeled these visas “very bad” and “unfair” to American workers, implementing a “Hire American” policy to reform the system.
The social media restrictions emerge as Trump’s controversial cabinet picks face intense scrutiny from Democratic senators.
Notable nominations include Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary, Kash Patel for FBI Director, Robert Kennedy Jr. for Health and Human Services Secretary and Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence.
Despite Democratic opposition, the Republican majority in the Senate means Trump’s nominees likely face smooth sailing in their confirmation processes, requiring only a simple majority in the 100-member chamber.
The Post noted that David Warrington, Trump’s campaign lawyer and personal attorney, is expected to serve as the White House counsel overseeing social media approvals.
Trump praised Warrington as “an esteemed lawyer and Conservative leader” when announcing his appointment last month.
The visa debate has particularly highlighted divisions within Trump’s base.
While tech industry leaders advocate for H-1B visas as crucial for filling specialized positions, some MAGA supporters argue the program disadvantages American workers.
The controversy intensified after Vivek Ramaswamy, set to co-lead the DOGE with Musk, suggested American culture was responsible for the need to hire foreign workers.
