Video: A sleepy Joe Biden appears to fall asleep during climate change conference, aide approaches and ‘wakes’ him

NEWS

President Joe Biden apparently fell asleep during Monday's opening sessions at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.

What are the details?

Widely shared video footage of the incident showed the president listening to opening remarks from a speaker lauding attendees for having the "power to make decisions and reach agreements which will affect the lives of generations to come."

In the video, 78-year-old Biden — his arms crossed at the elbows — closed his eyes for at least eight seconds while the speaker droned on.

He briefly opened his eyes, but then closed them once more for a whopping 25 seconds.

Biden only ended up reopening his eyes when an aide approached him, apparently waking him, and appeared to show him something on a handheld mobile device.Moments later, the speech concluded, and a weary looking Biden appeared to be more engaged, joining others in clapping for the speaker. He then rubbed his eyes and adjusted his mask as Italian Prime Minster Mario Draghi took the stage, the Daily Mail reported.

What else?

The Daily Mail reported that during his own speech, Biden said that "climate change is already ravaging the world."

"It's not hypothetical," he insisted, and called climate change "the existential threat to human existence as we know it."

He continued, "This is a decisive decade in which we have an opportunity to prove ourselves. We can keep the goal of limiting global warming to just 1.5 degrees Celsius if we come together. ... We're still falling short. There's no more time to hang back or sit on the fence or argue amongst ourselves. This is a challenge of our collective lifetimes. Glasgow must be the kick-off of a decade of ambition & innovation to preserve our shared future."
