A 10-year-old Florida boy whose father agreed to take him on a drive-by paintball attack was shot by a homeowner who returned fire with a real gun.
The boy was then run over by his father’s van, police in the Miami suburb of Opa-locka said. A local TV station reported that the child is expected to recover from his injuries.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The father, who is 26, told police his son begged him to drive by a home where young people were gathered so he could fire paintballs at them, said a police report released Tuesday.
The father told TV station WSVN that several children were taking part in the paintball battle when they ended up in front of the home where the shooting occurred.
The boy, who was apparently leaning out the van’s open side door, shot several rounds before the homeowner came into the yard and fired one shot, which struck the child.
According to the arrest report, the father then started to drive away. The boy fell to the pavement, and the rear wheels ran over his legs.
The homeowner told police he thought his home was under attack.
The father drove the child home, and the boy’s mother called 911, according to police.
The Miami Herald reports the father was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm. According to a police report, he “acted recklessly by agreeing to conduct a drive-by paint ball shooting.”
