President Trump announced that he will provide $4 million to businesses devastated by unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as well as $1 million to local law enforcement agencies and more than $42 million for public safety across the state.
The money, he said, would help support victims and secure prosecutions in a city reeling from damage done during protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.
He made the announcement during a roundtable meeting on Tuesday with police officials, community leaders, and elected representatives.
Earlier, he visited the site of a century-old store that had been destroyed.
The president said he was committed to helping Kenosha rebuild.
“I'm also providing nearly $4 million to support the small businesses that I talked about today that got burned up, burned down,” he said.
“And we're going to be providing over $42 million to support public safety statewide, including direct support for law enforcement and funding for additional prosecutors to punish criminals, and resources to provide services to victims of crime.”
The president is keen to portray himself as a friend to law enforcement, contrasting himself against Democrats who support “defund police” protests.
During his visit, he again said that unrest was focused on areas controlled by Democratic governors and mayors.
Republican strategists believe law and order could be key to winning over the suburban voters he needs to secure a second term.
Before setting off for Kenosha, Trump said he believed providing security was critical to healing division.“If you look at the black community, they want the police to help them stop crime. The Hispanic community, they want police,” he told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before boarding Air Force One. “They don’t want crime. They don’t wanna be mugged. They don’t wanna have any problems, and it’s just a shame.”
