Orbán: “Rule of law is a matter of honor for Hungary”
For Hungary, the rule of law is not a legal issue, but rather a matter of honor, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared following last week’s discussions with his Finnish counterpart.
“Whenever someone questions us or the rule of law in Hungary, they’re stepping on our honor and I would advise them to think this over carefully,” Orbán stated during a joint press conference with Antti Rinne, Finland’s current Prime Minister.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also noted that strong international relations are not built on one country insulting another but on mutual respect, and no country should hurl unfounded accusations against another, About Hungary reports.
“I don’t recommend getting to the point in Europe where a prime minister or one of their officials visits another country in the bloc to give them an ear-bashing on the issue of the rule of law, because that’ll lead to a lot of things, but not European unity,” Orbán continued.
During the press conference, Rinne told the audience that he and Orbán had discussed the tasks of Finland’s EU presidency which include the bloc’s enlargement, Brexit, and EU budget issues.
Building a better Europe is the common task,” Rinne said.
The Finnish Prime Minister also expressed that observing the founding principles of the EU and taking measures against climate change need to be preconditions for gaining access to the bloc’s funding.
