Who Broke Minnesota? The Same Democrats Now Pretending They’ll Fix It

When something's broken, you generally don't turn to the people who broke it to make things better. No, in a sane world, you dismiss the people who broke it and bring in someone who actually knows what they are doing. Unless, apparently, you are voters in the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (that's what passes for the Democrat Party in Minnesota), in which case, well, you're just fulfilling that old saying about the definition of insanity.

Case in point: This weak attempted flex by Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is angling to replace the worst governor in the nation, Minnesota's befuddled Tim Walz, and a bunch of other Minnesota Democrats.

OK, now that's funny right there. It is perhaps belaboring the obvious to note that these are the people who oversaw Minnesota's descent into nutballery, and now they are asking voters to give them just one more chance.

First, the state's budget is out of control, as are the budgets of the major cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul. This is driven mostly by huge increases in spending by state and municipal governments. Raising taxes, as Democrats predictably propose, won't fix this; it will just drive more productive residents out of the state.

Second and much, much worse, Minnesota, under Democrat control, has become ground zero for fraud- Medicare and Medicaid fraud and every other rip-off-the-taxpayers scheme you've ever heard of- and an amazing percentage of the perps are from Minnesota's vaunted Somali community. This fraud may be as high as $9 billion. That's "billion," with a "b" followed by an "illion."

Federal prosecutors estimate that roughly $9 billion in taxpayer dollars was stolen through schemes involving nutrition assistance, Medicaid services, and other federally funded programs intended to support vulnerable Americans. The fraud included the Feeding Our Future scheme and related cases, which have resulted in at least 78 federal arrests to date and exposed widespread abuse of public funds that were entrusted to the state for administration and oversight.

But Amy Klobuchar and her fellow travelers want the votes of Minnesotans, proclaiming loudly, "We'll get it right this time!"

They are promising to:

Lower costs. How? By raising taxes? Could it possibly be that they mean they will do things that will actually lower costs, like reduce the state's income tax, gasoline taxes, and property taxes? Like reducing onerous state regulations? No, they have no such notions. When a Democrat says "lower costs," you can read that as "yet more government handouts."

Transform our government. How? Into what? Something bigger and more intrusive than it already is? When a Democrat says "transform our government," you can read that as "explode the scope and intrusiveness of government."

Deliver results. How? What results? Higher taxes, fees and regulations? When a Democrat says they will "deliver results," you can read that as "we'll keep doing the same things that got us into this mess in the first place, because we don't know any other course of action, no matter how badly our state is failing."

It would be funny if it weren't so sad. And the really sad part is this: In Minnesota, right now, these people will probably get the chance to mess up the Land of 10,000 Lakes even worse than it already is.
