The Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that they’d arrested 11 suspects who they’re accusing of running a decade-long marriage scam that arranged fake weddings to help foreign nationals — mostly Chinese — get green cards. U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald for the Southern District of New York said it was one of the “largest marriage fraud schemes charged in United States history.”
Yes, it really happens — and in this case, at least 1,000 times.
Each defendant has been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and immigration fraud, crimes that carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison. But wait, there’s more: they’re also being charged with one count of conspiracy to encourage the unlawful residence of aliens in the United States, which could win them up to 10 years in prison.
Your wedding could cost you a pretty penny if you arrange it with these folks, the DOJ said in an announcement on their official website:
A two-count indictment was unsealed today charging 11 individuals with conspiring, over the course of more than a decade, to orchestrate more than 1,000 sham marriages to fraudulently obtain immigration status for foreign nationals, primarily citizens of the People’s Republic of China. Some individuals paid up to $100,000 per sham marriage, according to the indictment.
“This Department of Justice is rooting out fraud everywhere — including in our immigration system,” said Attorney General Todd Blanche. “The individuals who were arrested today allegedly orchestrated elaborate schemes to illegally obtain citizenship for foreign nationals through sham marriages. Schemes like this are a deliberate affront to the United States and our laws and will not be tolerated under the Trump Administration.”

The scheme wasn’t complicated: starting around 2016, the fraudsters would recruit Americans to “marry” foreigners, usually Chinese nationals. They’d put on a wedding, then afterward they’d create a life of photos and social media posts and open financial accounts to show what a happy couple they were. The recruiters would pay the American stooges around $30,000 for their efforts.
Now, it looks like these scammers will soon be getting divorced — from their freedom.
