Iran Now Offering Bounties for Killed or Captured American Soldiers

Iran has been taking a pounding from the United States and Israel for some months now. The regime is battered; the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps now appears to be either in charge or angling to be, having already seized control of what's left of Iran's military. Their civil leadership has been reduced to the third level by American explosives. And, the country is broke, with inflation at astronomic levels and their ports blockaded by the United States Navy.

So, when you hear that Iran is now offering a bounty to whomever can kill or capture an American service member, said bounty amounting to five billion tomans, about $30,000 in American freedom dollars, you have to wonder where they think they'll get the money should someone seek to collect. A toman is a superunit of Iran's rial, amounting to 10,000 of the new, devalued rials. Oh, and if a woman claims the prize, the award is doubled.

Iran's Army chief, a goblin named Amir Hatami, was quoted making the offer on Iran's Islamic Republic News Agency's X account.

An Agence France-Presse report, quoted and credited by the Irish news site The Journal, presented some details.

IRAN’S MILITARY HAS announced that it is offering a bounty equivalent to $30,000 (€26,000) for killing or capturing US soldiers, with the reward doubled if carried out by a woman.

Army chief Amir Hatami said the plan had been drawn up following “the large number of requests” to participate in the financial support, according to the IRNA state news agency.

There has been no known deployment of US ground forces in Iran during the Middle East war, with the exception of a rescue mission in April for a downed American pilot.

Hatami did not provide any details on where or when the killing or capturing of US soldiers was expected to take place.

“Anyone who kills or captures and hands over an invading American military personnel will receive a reward equivalent to $30,000 or 5 billion tomans from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army,” Hatami said, using an informal unit equivalent to 10,000 Iranian rials.

“Courageous Iranian women who carry out such an action will receive double the reward,” he added.

Now, this seems an unlikely prospect. What's left of Iran's leadership may be trying to get by on the cheap, but here's the real flaw in this notion: There are no American service members on the ground in Iran. That means anyone seeking this bounty would have to carry out their attack somewhere else, such as on an American installation elsewhere in the Middle East, and that's not going to be an easy task for an Iranian man (or woman) with his (or her) eye on the main chance. Add to that the complication of anyone collecting on this if they are not in Iran. How are they to get paid, when so much of Iran's remaining assets are locked up? It's not like Iran can take a page from Barack Obama's book and airlift a pallet of Iranian cash to some goblin hiding in the sand dunes in Kuwait.

An announcement like this smacks of desperation. This isn't an offer made by a regime that's confident about their chances of prevailing.

Then again, we are forced to remember, there are an unknown number of Iranian nationals illegally in the United States right now, in large part because of four years of non-enforcement of our borders and our immigration laws under Joe Biden, and we have little idea where many of them are and what they may be up to. That, honestly, is the real elephant in the room.
