Just ahead of Mother's Day in May, to much ballyhoo and fanfare, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) announced his pro-family and affordability initiative called "Golden State Start," which directs hospitals to give "birthing parents" 400 free diapers for their newborn babies.
But there were many legitimate questions about this latest taxpayer robbery, chief among them: How was Baby2Baby, the non-profit which was awarded the contract, able to not only submit a bid, but win the award? There were several conflicts of interest between Baby2Baby and the Newsoms: One, the fact that Baby2Baby co-CEO Norah Weinstein is on the board of one of First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom's non-profit organizations. Two, co-CEO Kelly Sawyer Patricof happens to be married to film producer Jamie Patricof, the scion of longtime Democrat super donor Alan Patricof.
Why this non-profit among the multitudinous child and mother-centric non-profits in the state? Was there any competitive bidding involved? As my colleague Ward Clark wisely opined, "The whole thing stinks like a dead woodchuck under the porch, in Georgia, in August."
CBS News Sacramento's investigative journalists thought so as well. So, they asked these very questions, and even put in a public records request to see the contract and the bidding sheet showing the other non-profits who might have been a part of the selection.
Over 60 days later, the investigative team has received bupkis. This is our shocked face.
California's delayed release of its Baby2Baby contract is casting a shadow over the state's new Golden State Diaper program.
Two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a controversial multimillion-dollar state diaper contract with Baby2Baby, a nonprofit with existing ties to the Newsom administration and the First Partner, Californians still have not been allowed to see the contract or competitive bid records behind the deal to manufacture and deliver millions of California co-branded free diapers to new parents.
The delay comes despite repeated requests by CBS California Investigates and despite California law requiring the state to release these records.
The Newsom administration waited 24 days to decide whether it would even allow the public to see the records, but continues to delay releasing the Baby2Baby contract and competitive bid records that the governor announced more than two months ago.
At the same time, California lawmakers are advancing legislation that would give state agencies additional time to respond to California Public Records Act requests, further extending how long the public must wait for records like these.

Remember Diaper-Gate? We fact-checked the diaper math. Now, we're fact-checking the process.
Nearly two months after the announcement, California still hasn't released the Baby2Baby contract or bid records. Now, lawmakers want to give agencies even more time to respond to public records requests.
Newsom's New Free Diaper Program Dodges Oversight for Connected Nonprofit
As RedState reported, Diaper-Gate and its requisite conflicts of interest are the least of the Governor and First Partner's worries. Thanks to Newsom's soon-to-be-sentenced former chief of staff Dana Williamson, and the FBI-wire-wearing Democrat lobbyist and powerbroker Alex Podesta, an investigation was opened by the Biden administration DOJ into the Governor and First Partner Jennifer, and they are both running scared. Despite Newsom's attempts to play the victim, claiming targeting by President Donald Trump because of Newsom's presidential aspirations, that dog won't hunt. The investigation was reportedly opened in 2021, long before Trump's second term. So, any presidential aspirations appear to be going up in smoke and may burn as long as that toxic Boyle Heights warehouse fire.
Just like that horrific fire, this indeed stinks to high heaven.
While CBS may continue to get the bureaucratic two-step from the office of the governor, the DOJ may already have these receipts. This is the electronic age, so trying to bury a contract while being under active investigation looks like obstruction of justice to me. Keeping the popcorn popped as this is starting to look like possible curtains for Gavin and Jennifer.
