“A federal three-judge court has upheld Tennessee’s new congressional map against claims of racial gerrymandering under the 14th Amendment,” SCOTUS Wire stated.

The Black Memphis residents whose overwhelmingly Democratic district was carved up “lack any direct evidence of racial motivation” in lawmakers’ decision to carve up their previous district and divvy it up into three other ones, the judges said as they denied a preliminary injunction. Instead, the new maps “are readily explainable by political motivations,” they said

In May, Tennessee’s GOP-led General Assembly redrew the state’s congressional map based on population and politics, not race, after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais.

The new map is expected to give Republicans a 9-0 advantage in the state's congressional delegation.

That led to the 9th District in Memphis being split into three districts. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit allege this was done to dilute Black votes and cement a Republican majority.

“The decisions by this court continue to further the disenfranchisement of Black voters in Memphis,” said Amber Sherman, one of the plaintiffs.
