Kentucky Governor Pressures McConnell to Show He Can Serve or Step Down.

 Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has called on Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, to address his ability to serve amid a prolonged absence from Congress, while McConnell has insisted that he will complete an ongoing rehabilitation program and remain in office.

 WHAT HAPPENED:  Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) is calling on Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to publicly demonstrate that he is capable of serving in office or resign from the Senate after the Republican lawmaker’s extended absence from public view.

 DETAIL:  In a letter sent Monday to McConnell and his staff, with a copy to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), Beshear argued that elected officials owe voters transparency regarding their ability to carry out their duties and said speculation surrounding the 84-year-old McConnell’s condition could be avoided with a minimal amount of public disclosure. McConnell has not appeared publicly for more than 40 days, aside from hospital photographs released by his office, and is expected to remain away from the Senate while undergoing rehabilitation, as he has not yet been medically cleared to resume his duties. Earlier this month, McConnell allies said the senator was alert and recovering in the hospital while denying online rumors claiming he was brain-dead. Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) also called on McConnell to disclose his health status or step down, saying voters deserve greater transparency. Beshear has previously urged Thune to investigate whether McConnell remains fit to serve in the Senate. Significantly, there have previously been multiple incidents in which McConnell has suffered apparent health crises in public, falling silent and freezing in place for extended periods in the middle of speeches to the press. McConnell, who has said he intends to complete his term despite his ongoing rehabilitation, is scheduled to retire when his term ends in January 2027.
