On Sunday, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) appeared on Fox News Sunday with host Maria Bartiromo. Among other topics, one point of discussion was the unfortunate passing of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and the late Senator's support for the SAVE America Act.
Senator Lee pointed out that the best thing the Senate could do to honor Senator Graham's memory would be to pass the Act, which Senator Graham had co-sponsored.
From that conversation:
Maria Bartiromo: And one of the pieces of legislation that the senator talked about and supported was the SAVE America Act, something that you co-sponsored, something that you have been pushing for a long time. What are your expectations for the SAVE America Act?
Senator Lee: Look, this is something that Senator Lindsey Graham spent a lot of time with. Like me, he had a lot of enthusiasm for this bill, which I introduced in the Senate about two and a half years ago. I believe, Maria, that there are multiple paths ahead by which we could pass this. Maybe that involves attaching it to another must-pass vehicle, maybe it involves bringing it up on the floor, and debating it until it passes, something I've long advocated. Maybe it involves picking out pieces of it that could be implemented through creative uses of budget reconciliation. I'm not terribly partial to any of these three. I personally prefer the second. I think that would give us our best chance. But I will take any opportunity to debate this. Any opportunity to cause it to become law, because the American people deserve it, the American people want it. Voters overwhelmingly support it to the tune of about 80 percent. That's Democrats and Republicans alike. One of the best ways we could honor Lindsey Graham's legacy would be to take this up and pass it this month.
That's a great point, but it is perhaps belaboring the obvious to point out that with Senator Graham gone, that's one guaranteed "Yes" vote on the SAVE America Act that we cannot count on any longer, at least, until we know who wins South Carolina's special election to serve as a replacement.

Senator Lee is not wrong, though. If the final piece of Senator Graham's legacy would be the passage of this, the single most important piece of legislation before this Congress, then it's a safe bet he'd be content with that. There are, as Senator Lee points out, multiple ways to get this done, and we're fast running out of time. It's probably already too late to pass the SAVE America Act and have all of its provisions in place for the 2026 elections. But 2028 will be around before we know it.
So, yes, the Senate, or at least Senate Republicans, should get this done by whatever means necessary. Do it in Senator Graham's memory, or we may well be viewing the passing not only of him, but of the integrity and trustworthiness of American elections.
