Jack Smith's Ghost Haunts DOJ As Burn‑Bag Document Trove Surfaces

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith proved to be quite the canny character as he doggedly tried to get Donald Trump on charges of illegally retaining classified

documents and attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Both cases died painful deaths: a judge ruled Smith’s appointment unlawful in the documents case, and the election matter was dropped after Trump won back the Oval Office.

But the ghost of Smith won’t leave the Department of Justice, and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche revealed on the “Hang Out With Sean Hannity” podcast released Tuesday that the department had found a room packed with documents that had been put in burn bags — implying that someone wanted to get rid of them but somehow failed.

Did someone else save the evidence on purpose?

"It's not the existence of a burn bag that I think is interesting or problematic depending on which side you're on," Blanche said.

"This one was in a place where I get the point that an honorable FBI agent might have left it there because it was not where it would normally be to be destroyed," he added. "[We] kind of stumbled on it, but it looked almost intentional."

Acting AG Blanche on finding Jack Smith's Trump probe documents in burn bags at DOJ:

'[We] kind of stumbled on it, but it looked almost intentional.'

Blanche says the room held material staff didn't know existed. The burn bags sat in a spot where they'd never normally go for destruction — leading him to believe an 'honorable' FBI agent may have preserved them on purpose.

Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino told Hannity a similar story back in April, describing how they had found “the mother lode” of documents. It’s unclear if Blanche is referring to the same tranche. Asked whether he thought they were intentionally spared, Bongino said simply, “Yes.” He continued, saying that the documents showed the Smith’s Crossfire Hurricane probe was “bull****”:

And this is why I say to people that, be careful painting the entire bureau with an overly broad brush. There were a ton of bad actors, more than I expected, and you were correct about that.

But there were a lot of people in there, under extreme pressure, who, you get where I'm going with this? Who were probably like, “This isn't right?”

…They saved it on purpose.

And it was the mother lode.

Although Smith is not currently under criminal investigation, multiple oversight probes are underway, including reviews of his conduct as special counsel. He made a mockery of justice in his quixotic quest to get Donald Trump by any means possible, and one can only hope that this “mother lode” finally leads to some accountability. We have yet to really see that.
