BREAKING: New Trump class warships will be powered by NUCLEAR with state of the art weapons

The new Trump class warship will be nuclear-powered as opposed to by gas or diesel, and it will contain state of the art laser weapons and electromagnetic railguns.

Here’s more from the WSJ:

The new battleship named after President Trump will be nuclear-powered, the U.S. Navy said Monday, a move expected to increase the cost and complexity of the multibillion-dollar project that was already facing questions about whether it would actually be built.

The decision to use nuclear power instead of gas turbine or diesel engines normally used in destroyers, cruisers and frigates was tucked inside an annual 30-year shipbuilding plan sent to Congress. The Navy said using nuclear power for propulsion would allow the ship to travel longer distances and faster.

Defense experts have already questioned the need for such a large ship, which Trump announced at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., in December. The battleship, which officials have said would weigh 30,000-40,000 tons, is expected to be up to four times the size of a modern destroyer.

The Navy hasn’t used nuclear propulsion for its surface warships since the 1990s. Those ships were expensive to operate, and the reactors needed to be refueled more often than the reactors used in today’s aircraft carriers and submarines.

Navy officials have said the new battleship would be armed with unproven next-generation weapons including lasers and rail guns, which are weapons that use electricity to fire a projectile instead of gunpowder. Trump said the ships would also carry nuclear cruise missiles.

“The nuclear-powered Battleship is designed to provide the Fleet with a significant increase in combat power by longer endurance, higher speed, and accommodating advanced weapon systems required for modern warfare,” the Navy said in the shipbuilding plan.

The decision to power the battleship with a nuclear reactor would likely add to the cost to the already expensive ship, said Bryan Clark, a naval expert with the Hudson Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

“There’s no cost savings really to be gained by going nuclear—if anything, it’s going to cost a little bit more,” he said. “The bigger impact is this operational impact.”

But nuclear power has its advantages. The Navy has designed its submarines and aircraft carriers to be nuclear powered so they don’t have to be refueled routinely like other warships, which require replenishment every four to seven days, Clark said.

The oilers that transfer fuel, food and other supplies to conventionally powered warships also can be vulnerable to attack, providing another benefit to nuclear-powered ships, Clark said.

A nuclear-powered ship could likely travel faster while also being able to use electromagnetic railguns or lasers, which consume large amounts of electricity, Clark said. A conventionally powered ship might need to reduce its speed to use these types of weapons.

In addition to being more expensive to build, nuclear ships have higher maintenance costs, Clark said. The Navy has four shipyards that service its nuclear fleet, and the two that service aircraft carriers are overloaded.

These new ships should be state of the art badass, just like our president.
