A “Muslims-only” celebration at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark in Grand Prairie, Texas, has been canceled. The private gathering, scheduled for June 1st, was initially promoted on flyers circulating on social media as an exclusive event open "only" to Muslims and their families.
Halal food was to be served while the park provided a "private prayer area" for park-goers.
The announcement quickly triggered widespread backlash, with critics condemning the use of a public facility for blatant religious discrimination. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) intervened, warning city officials they risked losing $530,000 in state grants if the event moved forward.
"The City must cancel the event and commit to never allowing something like it again by May 11th, or lose $530,000 in state grants," he said on X. "Let this be a lesson to local officials: Facilities funded by ALL taxpayers are not just for a subset of Texans."

Abbott signed House Bill 4211 into law this past September, banning residential property developments from creating Sharia compounds and defrauding and discriminating against Texans. And yet, they wanted to turn a family-friendly waterpark into a Sharia compound for the day. Sorry, folks. Not in Trump's America.
Turns out, money talks. The loss of half a million in grants spoke volumes to the park owners and the city. The group behind the event quickly and quietly attempted to walk back the most egregious aspects of the park's announcement. They changed flyers to promote it as a "Modest dress only" event rather than a "Muslim only event," and swapped out "For Muslims only" to "All are welcome."
Apparently, that wasn't enough. Grand Prairie officials confirmed the cancellation on Wednesday, stating the decision was made in the best interest of the city. The waterpark, which receives taxpayer funding, will now remain open to all residents, without religious restrictions, on that date. Presumably, that will extend to all future dates as well.
"After further review and in the best interest of the City of Grand Prairie, the June 1 EID event at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark has been canceled," the statement, issued by representatives for both the water park and the city, reads.
Buh-bye. Perhaps next time, a review of such a blatantly discriminatory event should be conducted before approval? Just a thought.
RedState Editor Bob Hoge reported on the initial setup of conditions and rules that were to be followed for the Muslim-only event, including "uphold(ing) Islamic etiquette" and requiring men and women to begin "lowering the gaze" in each other's presence.
"I’ll 'lower my gaze' the day the United States is overthrown, but unless and until that happens, you can kiss my backside," Hoge wrote.
