Alex Murdaugh’s Murder Convictions Of Wife And Son OVERTURNED

This is quite shocking.

Disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh, who hailed from a prominent South Carolina family, has just had his convictions for murdering his wife and son overturned.

Murdaugh was convicted of killing his wife and son in 2023, but now the South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned his conviction.

The New York Post reported more on the court’s surprising ruling:

Alex Murdaugh — the disgraced South Carolina legal scion who was found guilty of killing his wife and son — had his murder convictions sensationally overturned Wednesday by the state Supreme Court after it found that the local county clerk had “placed her fingers on the scales of justice.”

Murdaugh, 57, was serving two consecutive life sentences without parole for the grisly 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and their 22-year-old son, Paul, following a dramatic, six-week trial that gripped the nation in 2023.

“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” the justices wrote in a 5-0 ruling.

Despite having his conviction tossed and a new trial ordered, Murdaugh will not be allowed to walk free. He is also serving concurrent 40-year federal and 27-year state sentences for financial crimes for stealing from his clients.

Murdaugh’s lawyers appealed the murder convictions, arguing the trial was affected by county clerk Becky Hill, who they say tampered with the jury during the trial.

They also accused the judge of allowing prosecutors to present more than 12 hours of evidence regarding his financial crimes to prove a motive for the murder.

AP reported prosecutors already have a plan set for retrial:

Prosecutors said they would aggressively seek to try Murdaugh again on the murder charges with state Attorney General Alan Wilson saying he respected the court’s decision but no one is above the law.

Murdaugh’s lawyers pointed out that trial will look a lot different, as the justices also ruled days of evidence at the murder trial about how Murdaugh stole from clients, many of them in dire straits, shouldn’t be allowed next time.

Still, the ruling is a win for Murdaugh, who admits to being a thief, liar, insurance cheat and bad lawyer, but has adamantly denied killing his wife Maggie and younger son Paul since he found their bodies outside their home in 2021.

“Alex has said from day one that he did not kill his wife and son. We look forward to a new trial,” Murdaugh’s lawyers Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin said in a joint statement.

Court said clerk attacked Murdaugh’s credibility with jurors
In their unanimous ruling Wednesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court said the conduct by Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill “egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility” by suggesting to jurors his testimony could not be trusted.

A few jurors said Hill, assigned to oversee the evidence and the jury during the trial, told them to watch Murdaugh’s body language when he testified in his own defense and to not be fooled, confused or thrown off by what he might say.“By urging the jurors not to be fooled or convinced by Murdaugh’s defense, Hill essentially implored the jurors to find him guilty, the ultimate issue in the case,” the justices wrote, adding that the comments insinuated there was something unusual and suspicious about his decision to testify.
