Securing American Elections
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), also known as the SAVE America Act in its latest form, is a critical Republican-led bill that requires documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and backed by President Trump and House conservatives, it directly tackles the vulnerabilities created by open-border policies and weak federal election laws. For decades, the National Voter Registration Act has allowed registration based on a simple self-attestation—checking a box claiming citizenship under penalty of perjury. This system is dangerously inadequate. With over 4.6 million illegal immigrants released into the country under Biden-Harris policies, plus millions more gotaways, states issue driver's licenses and benefits that create easy pathways for non-citizens to register and vote illegally. Some localities even allow non-citizens to vote in local races, eroding the principle that only American citizens decide federal elections. The SAVE Act fixes this by mandating that states demand hard proof of citizenship—passports, birth certificates, or REAL ID documents confirming citizenship—before accepting any federal voter registration, whether in person, by mail, or at agencies like DMVs. It requires an alternative process for rare cases (such as religious objections or name changes), with affidavits and standards set by the Election Assistance Commission. States must also audit existing voter rolls using free access to DHS and Social Security databases to identify and remove non-citizens. Election officials who register illegals face penalties, and citizens gain stronger legal tools to sue for enforcement. This is not "suppression"—it's basic sovereignty. Polls show massive support: 70-80% of Americans, including majorities of Democrats and independents, want proof of citizenship to vote. It builds trust in results and prevents the dilution of legal citizens' voices. The House has passed strong versions repeatedly. As of February 2026, Republicans are pushing the latest iteration amid funding fights, forcing Senate action. Democrats' resistance reveals their priorities: power over secure elections. Passing the SAVE Act is essential to protect American democracy from foreign and illegal influence before the midterms. It upholds the simple truth that American elections are for Americans only.
