Federal officers are searching the home of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, The California Post confirmed.
The searches are being conducted at Carvalho’s San Pedro home, his office at LAUSD in downtown Los Angeles and another location in Miami tied to the investigation, according to a law enforcement source. An affidavit filed concerning the search was under seal, officials said.
LAUSD employees looked confused outside headquarters Wednesday morning, unsure if they were able to go into work. Federal agents were seen entering the building, but would not comment on the reason for their visit when asked by a reporter for The California Post.
Carvalho is the LAUSD’s chief employee and has led one of the nation’s largest school systems since 2022.
It’s unclear why authorities are searching Carvalho’s home and office.
The progressive LA schools boss has voiced his opposition to the federal government’s immigration agenda in the past.
In July, Carvalho slammed ICE agents for allegedly urinating on the grounds of a Pico Rivera school as a “new level of despicable insult.” He said at a news conference in September last year that students and families should be protected from “immoral, unethical and illegal actions.”
“Despite the injustice. Despite the fear. Despite the pressure. Despite the unbearable lack of humanity. Our kids are soaring,” Carvalho said. “And for the second year in a row, these students have provided best-in-class achievement across all grade levels.”
Carvalho came to the United States as an undocumented immigrant himself and has been passionate about protecting students from ICE agents’ visits to city schools.
School officials have said students are “dealing and engaging with issues” in the news and community.
LA cops have taken a more disciplinarian stance on the student walkouts.
“School attendance is mandatory in the City of Los Angeles and there may be legal consequences for parents and students,” the LAPD wrote. “It is unlawful for any minors under 18 to be in public places, streets, or amusement spots during school hours.”
He was a former longtime superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools before coming to LA.
