Changing your car's engine oil at home is a straightforward DIY job that saves money and ensures it's done right. It typically takes 30–60 minutes for beginners. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specifics (oil type, capacity, filter location, torque specs), as models vary.
Safety First

- Park on a flat, level surface.
- Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels.
- Let the engine cool for at least 30–60 minutes after driving (hot oil burns badly).
- Wear gloves, safety glasses, and old clothes.
- Never work under a car supported only by a jack—use jack stands or ramps.
- Have a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Dispose of old oil responsibly (take to an auto parts store or recycling center).
- New engine oil (correct type/viscosity and amount—check manual, usually 4–6 quarts).
- New oil filter (matching your car).
- Oil filter wrench or pliers.
- Socket/ratchet set (for drain plug).
- Oil drain pan (at least 5–6 quarts capacity).
- Funnel.
- Rags/paper towels.
- Jack and jack stands (or ramps).
- Optional: new drain plug gasket/washer (recommended to prevent leaks).
- Prepare the car
Drive briefly to warm the oil (helps it drain fully), then park and let it cool. Pop the hood and remove the oil fill cap (on top of the engine) to help drainage. - Lift the vehicle
Safely jack up the front (or whole car) and secure with jack stands. Or drive onto ramps. Ensure it's stable before going underneath. - Drain the old oil
Place the drain pan under the oil pan (bottom of engine). Locate the drain plug (bolt on the lowest part of the oil pan). Loosen it with the socket (counterclockwise), then finish by hand. Let oil drain fully (5–10 minutes). Inspect the plug/gasket for damage—replace if worn. - Remove and replace the oil filter
Locate the filter (usually cylindrical, near the oil pan). Position the drain pan underneath. Use the filter wrench to loosen and remove it (counterclockwise). Let residual oil drip. Lubricate the new filter's rubber gasket with fresh oil, then hand-tighten it plus ¾ turn (or per filter instructions—don't overtighten). - Reinstall the drain plug
Wipe the plug and threads clean. Reinstall (hand-tighten first), then torque to spec (usually 20–30 ft-lbs—check manual). Use a new washer if available. - Lower the car
Remove jack stands and lower safely. - Add new oil
Using the funnel, pour in the recommended amount of new oil (start with ~80% of capacity to avoid overfilling). Replace the fill cap. Run the engine for 30–60 seconds, then shut off. Wait 5 minutes and check the dipstick—add more if needed to reach the full mark. Don't overfill. - Final checks
Start the engine and look/listen for leaks under the car (run for a few minutes). Check oil level again after it settles. Reset any oil change light (per manual). Clean up spills.
