Tucker Carlson bizarrely claimed the US would overthrow Nicolás Maduro in an effort bring gay marriage to Venezuela, according to video that resurfaced in the wake of Saturday’s successful capture of the dictator.
The conservative talk show host first made the risible claim in October 2025 that US military action in Venezuela was due to Maduro’s opposition to gay marriage.
“That is a distinct possibility, but no one will say that out loud,” he added.
Carlson also described Venezuela as “one of the most conservative countries in North or South or Central America,” second only to Trump’s ally El Salvador, while insisting that he was “not defending the regime” in Caracas.
“The US-backed opposition leader who would take Maduro’s place if he were taken out is, of course, pretty eager to get gay marriage in Venezuela,” he added.
This was likely referring to 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, a former member of the Venezuelan National Assembly who has expressed support for marriage equality.
Machado led the opposition to Maduro and would have run for president in 2024, but was banned from running by the government in 2023.
“Globohomo,” an online conspiracy theory, has been posited as meaning either “global homogenization” or “global homosexuality.”
Proponents of the theory claim there is a vast conspiracy seeking to destroy traditional cultures and replace them with a corporate global “uniculture” with an “LGBTQ+ agenda.”
Carlson’s resurfaced rant attracted derision on social media.
“This clown never disappoints,” one user wrote.
“Tucker Carlson has completely lost the plot,” added a second.
“I can’t believe people listen to this nutcase,” wrote a third.
Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores made their first appearance in a US federal court in New York Monday after their capture during a daring mission after President Trump gave the final directive for the US to attack the South American nation.
The pair were charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the United States. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
