Democrat Governor Announces “Refund Checks” For Millions Of Residents

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state’s first-ever “inflation refund checks,” with some checks being worth up to $400.

“We will begin mailing refund checks to eligible taxpayers at the end of September 2025. Over 8 million New Yorkers will receive refunds, and this large volume of checks will be mailed over a multiple week period,” a release from the New York Department of Taxation and Finance read.

“You may receive your check sooner or later than your neighbors, as mailings are not based on zip code or region. We cannot provide a specific delivery schedule, and our Contact Center representatives will not have additional information on the status of your check,” it continued.

“Inflation Refund checks are on the way for more than eight million New Yorkers. No forms to fill out. No hoops to jump through. Just a check of up to $400 to help families facing rising costs,” Hochul said.

More from the New York Post:

The Democratic governor, who is up for re-election next year, had been touting her so-called inflation refund all summer and finally announced Friday that checks were starting to hit the mail, calling the endeavor a “one-time statement.”

“We hear you, New Yorkers. We hear you. And if we can put money back in your pockets through an ‘inflation rebate,’ then you know we care about you,” Hochul said, standing in front of about a dozen supporters at a gymnasium in Albany.

The checks will go out to individuals making under $150,000 a year and families making under $300,000 a year based on their 2023 tax return.

Individuals and families must meet the following thresholds to qualify:

  • Families making under $150,000: $400
  • Families making between $150,000 and $300,000: $300
  • Individuals making under $75,000: $200
  • Individual making between $75,000 and $150,000: $150

Here’s a breakdown of how many New Yorkers will receive refund checks by region:

  • New York City: 3.53 million
  • Long Island: 1.25 million
  • Mid-Hudson: 924,000
  • Western New York: 585,000
  • Finger Lakes: 513,000
  • Capital Region: 475,000
  • Central New York: 321,000
  • Southern Tier: 251,000
  • Mohawk Valley: 198,000
  • North Country: 156,000

Gothamist noted:

Anyone claimed as a dependent for the 2023 tax year will not receive a check.

Hochul said there will be cases where people receive checks before their neighbors do. She said that’s not a reason for concern, since the checks will be trickling out over several weeks.

“ If your neighbor gets it and you don’t, don’t start calling us,” she said. “Give us October and November, OK?”
