Russian President Vladimir Putin has just agreed to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure for 30 days as the two nations negotiate a peace agreement.
The announcement came after Putin spoke with President Donald Trump on a call about ending the war.
Russian state media is reporting that Putin ordered the military to stop strikes on those targets for 30 days immediately after speaking with Trump.
Following the Trump-Putin call, the White House published a readout of the meeting.
The key lines from the meeting include details about the ceasefire along with agreements on negotiations and a possible weapons pact.
Trump and Putin also discussed improved long-term ties between the United States and Russia, including “enormous economic deals.”
The White House readout says:
“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on the implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace.”
The White House confirmed that peace negotiations will take place “immediately.”
“These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East,” the readout says.
“The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts.”
Trump and Putin also discussed “strategic” weapons – an apparent reference to nukes.
“They further discussed the need to stop the proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application,” the White House said.
Moving forward, the U.S. and Russia will aim to secure economic ties that will be prosperous for both nations.
“The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside,” the readout says.
“This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved.”
Elsewhere, Trump and Putin agreed on a prisoner swap deal during the call.
The prisoner swap deal was revealed in a statement from the Kremlin via Russian state media.
Moscow says that Putin and Trump expressed mutual interest in “normalizing relations” between the US and Russia.
A prisoner swap between Moscow and Kyiv for 175 prisoners of war (on each side) was agreed.
Moscow also agreed to hand over 23 gravely wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
This is a breaking news story.
