White House Debunks NBC Report About Mexico Refusing to Accept Deportation Flights

Earlier today, NBC News released a report claiming that Mexico is refusing to accept deportation flights from the United States.

According to the White House, Mexico actually just accepted four deportation flights yesterday, as well as thousands via other types of transportation.

State Dept spokeswoman posted:

The fake news is already lying about our successful partnership with Mexico helping to make our region safe again. The truth is, four ICE flights arrived in Mexico yesterday. Two military flights were sent to Guatemala because they were filled with Guatemalans. 2000 aliens were deported to Mexico yesterday alone by land and air, as Remain in Mexico was reimplemented. Promises made, promises kept.

WH Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted:

Thanks to President Trump: Yesterday, Mexico accepted a record 4 deportation flights in 1 day! This comes in addition to unrestricted returns at the land border, the deportation of non-Mexicans, & reinstatement of Remain-in-Mexico. Mexico has also mobilized 30K National Guard.

NBC News issued update to their story:

A White House official said in a text message that “the flights thing was an administrative issue and was quickly rectified.”

After the publication of this article, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeted, “Yesterday, Mexico accepted a record 4 deportation flights in 1 day!”

A White House official, however, did not clarify whether they were military, commercial or private flights.

The White House clarified that Mexico’s so-called “refusal” to accept a deportation flight was actually due to administrative confusion, not unwillingness on the part of Mexico.

The New York Post confirmed:

A White House official told the outlet via text message that “the flights thing was an administrative issue and was quickly rectified.”

The flight rejection appeared to be confusion over the Department of Defense flight manifest, according to Fox News’ Bill Melugin, who cited a senior State Department official.

“Per the official, Mexico was full steam ahead to accept the deportations – and would have if there hadn’t been a misunderstanding regarding the paperwork,” he tweeted.

About 2,000 illegal migrants were deported to the country Thursday, with the nation detaining around 5,000 within its own borders, Melugin added.
