Donald Trump and his new border czar, Tom Homan, aren’t messing around when it comes to fixing the border.
“Trump is planning a border crackdown,” reads The Washington Post headline. “Biden already started one.”
Less than one week after Donald Trump’s yuge election win, and the Leftmedia’s Beltway rag is already crediting Joe Biden with Trump’s success.
The big news over the weekend does indeed pertain to one of the campaign’s top issues: immigration. It’s now time to fix the border disaster created by Biden and his “border czar,” Kamala Harris, who together allowed at least 10 million illegals to cross our borders, often helping them disperse throughout the country while bogus asylum claims are being processed at a snail’s pace. Yes, despite media whitewashing, Harris was the border czar, which in her case was sort of like being a Walmart greeter who never showed up to work.
What Trump means by a border czar is not entirely settled, but he announced Sunday that Tom Homan, his former acting head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will serve in the post. As Trump put it on Truth Social, Homan will be “in charge of our Nation’s Borders,” plus “all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin.” During the campaign, he routinely promised to “launch the largest deportation of criminals in American history.”
Homan’s not messing around, either. He told the Republican National Convention, “As a guy who spent 34 years deporting illegal aliens, I’ve got a message: To the millions of illegal aliens that Joe Biden released into our country, in violation of federal law — you better start packing now.”
Yesterday morning, Homan sent a message to Democrat governors and mayors of sanctuary states and cities: “If you’re not going to help us, get the hell out of the way because we’re going to do it.”
When CBS’s “60 Minutes” cringed about the cost of deportation — especially in light of Trump saying, “There is no price tag” — Homan asked his own question: “What price do you put on national security? Is it worth it?” Asked how he’d stop from separating families, he matter-of-factly countered, “Families can be deported together.”
Just the word “deportation” sends leftists reaching for the smelling salts and Maalox, but let’s stop for a minute to think logically about what deportation means.
Number one, 8 U.S. Code § 1227 covers the conditions for deportation. It is a consequence for anyone illegally crossing the border, illegally overstaying a visa, committing fraud as part of the immigration process, or perpetrating a number of other crimes. It’s not based on race or sex or age. It’s simply the law.
Conversely, if you come here through legal avenues and don’t commit any crimes, you’ll be just fine. Welcome to America.
The argument from the Left (and immigration enthusiasts on the Right) is basically that a whole lot of people broke the law under Biden, so let’s not be mean and get carried away by loading people up into concentration camps and cattle cars. What other crime is treated this way? Let’s take murder, for example. There were nearly 18,000 murders in the U.S. in 2023. Because it happened a lot, should we just throw up our hands when it comes to bringing justice to 18,000 murderers and try to do better next time?
Speaking of murder, over the last few years, more than 13,000 murders were committed by illegal aliens. Laken Riley and the other victims would still be alive if the alien weren’t here in the first place. Countless other crimes wouldn’t have been committed without illegal aliens being welcomed across Biden’s open border.
Start deportations with these criminals. They shouldn’t spend one more day in the United States soaking up taxpayer resources. “We have no choice,” Trump said on the campaign trail. “We have got to get all of these criminals, these murderers, and drug dealers, and everything — we’re getting them out.”
Simultaneously, begin by deporting those already ordered out of the country. Veteran political analyst Byron York notes, “Last year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported that as of Sept. 30, 2023, there were 1,292,830 people in the U.S. illegally who have had full legal due process and have received a final deportation order from an immigration judge. In the ensuing year, there are estimates that number has grown to somewhere between 1.35 million and 1.6 million.” Kindly deport them.
Next, crack down on employers who hire illegals and cut off the spigot of lavish taxpayer-funded benefits for illegals who arrive. Without economic incentives to come and stay, people won’t come, or they will leave. A caravan headed this way has already disbanded after Trump’s election.
Once people are deported by authorities, others will self-deport rather than be caught.
In another story, The Washington Post frets that deportation “could upend the lives of millions of immigrants.” I don’t mean to be unkind, but they upended their lives to come here illegally in the first place. And they’ve upended the lives and taken the resources and jobs of millions of Americans. Actions have consequences, despite the Left’s never-ending attempts on nearly every issue to shield their chosen “victims” from those repercussions.
Will every illegal in the country be deported? That’s highly unlikely. Indeed, even Trump concedes, “We have to have the heart, too.” But restoring the Rule of Law depends on enforcing the law — in this case, with a lot of deportations.
