Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) openly disputed Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) assertion that President Joe Biden’s actions contributed to Kamala Harris’s crushing electoral defeat.
Amid the aftermath of the recent election, Fetterman has voiced strong criticism of Pelosi (D-CA), Breitbart reported.
Fetterman pointed out the contradictions in Pelosi’s statements.
The Democrat senator also emphasized that the outcomes she desired were precisely what transpired with Biden’s early withdrawal from the presidential race.
In an interview with Politico, Fetterman stressed that Pelosi cannot “have it both ways.”
He highlighted her role in the dynamics that led to Biden stepping aside.
According to Fetterman, Pelosi and other top Democrats forced Biden to step aside following his poor showing at the presidential debate on June 27.
Following the debate, Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris on July 21.
Pelosi claims Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris undermined the potential for a more competitive primary election.
However, Pelosi failed to mention this issue at the time and only made the claim after Harris was crushed by President Donald Trump.
According to Pelosi, had Biden exited the race sooner, it might have allowed other candidates to more effectively consolidate their campaigns and build a stronger challenge.
Pelosi, who has been a pivotal figure in the Democratic Party, likened her role to that of a “godmother” or “enforcer” within the party’s ranks.
Her statements to the New York Times suggested that Biden’s timing and immediate endorsement of Harris effectively stifled the primary process.
Fetterman, defending Biden, asserted that despite significant pressure from donors and party colleagues for Biden to step down, he remained supportive of the president’s decision.
He contested Pelosi’s narrative that Biden’s actions had hampered the party’s chances in the election.
Moreover, Fetterman took aim at Pelosi’s decision to seek reelection, questioning why she, at the age of 84, would not step aside to allow younger leadership within the party.
“I think it’s really ironic that you have a woman at age 84 and she is still hanging on,” Fetterman stated to Politico.
“Why not give a younger generation an opportunity to occupy that seat?”
Pelosi argued that an earlier decision by Biden could have altered the landscape of the Democrat primary, allowing other potential candidates to step up.
“Had Biden gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” Pelosi noted, suggesting that the timing of Biden’s endorsement of Harris was crucial.
She further elaborated that the immediate endorsement post-withdrawal “really made it almost impossible to have a primary at that time.
“If it had been much earlier, it would have been different.”
She made the point to underline the strategic missteps that might have led to the electoral outcome.
The exchange between Fetterman and Pelosi highlights a significant rift within the Democratic Party.
It comes as the Democrats grapple with the fallout of the recent election loss.
