AUBURN, Calif. — A pair who allegedly slipped a bag of methamphetamine into sourdough bread behind an Auburn supermarket were arrested on drug charges after a Placer County sheriff’s dog sniffed out the suspect loaf.

The Sept. 21 arrest at a north Auburn Raley’s sent the two to Placer County Jail on charges including felony possession of a controlled substance for sale and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Deputies and their patrol dog, Axel, were called to check on a car parked behind the supermarket in the 13300 block of Lincoln Way when the canine alerted to a sourdough loaf inside the vehicle, said sheriff’s officials.

Deputies inspected the bread and found a small stash of suspected methamphetamine inside. They also spotted signs of suspected drug sales inside the car. The two people inside the vehicle showed signs of being under the influence of a stimulant, said deputies, and were placed under arrest.
