2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday that billionaire Elon Musk may have an advisory role in his administration if he is reelected in November.
Trump told Reuters that he would consider having Musk as an adviser or in a cabinet position during an interview in York, Pennsylvania.
“He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would. He’s a brilliant guy,” Trump said.
Musk endorsed Trump shortly after the former president was shot in the head at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The Tesla CEO reportedly said he plans to commit around $45 million per month to the American PAC, a super political action committee (PAC) helping to elect Trump into office come this November.
“I am willing to serve,” Musk wrote late Monday on Twitter with a seemingly AI-generated image of himself behind a Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) podium.
Trump said he will also consider ending the $7,500 tax credit for purchases of electric vehicles (EVs), according to Reuters. While President Joe Biden expanded the EV tax credit in 2022, Trump expressed his unfavorable opinion of tax credit and incentives in general.
“Tax credits and tax incentives are generally not a very good thing,” Trump told the outlet.
Trump seemed warm to the idea of Musk serving a role in his administration Aug. 12 in an interview the two broadcasted on Twitter’s “Spaces.” When Musk told Trump he would be interested in working on a commission to cut wasteful government spending, the GOP nominee said, “I love it.”
Trump’s remarks in York come as the former president kicked off a week of counter-programming across battleground states as the Democratic National Convention (DNC) goes on in Chicago.
