Netflix continues it’s woke programming geared towards children with the release of “CoComelon Lane,” a spinoff of the beloved “CoComelon,” which introduced a scene causing uproar among parents.
The contentious segment features a young boy wearing a tutu and tiara, preparing for a photo session with his two gay dads in the episode “Just be me.”
In the episode, the gay fathers encourage the boy to “be himself.”
They sing to him, “Think about all the things you like to do; just be you.” Initially the boy dresses up as a firefighter and a chef but then he puts on a tiara and tutu and spins around the room dancing.
The scene has ignited a firestorm among parents who do not appreciate their children being exposed in song to a boy dress as a girl dancing for their gay daddies.
Will Hild, the executive director of Consumers’ Research, expressed his vehement disapproval to Fox News Digital, stating, “Now they’ve injected a far-left woke political agenda into it in a frankly, disgusting way. I don’t think the word groomer is even too far to use.”
Hild’s strong words reflect a broader concern among parents who believe the show has moved beyond promoting acceptance of same-sex families to endorsing cross-dressing and a more extensive progressive agenda.
Hild further criticized the perceived strategy of media companies, asserting, “They have to sneak these themes into well-established shows in an insidious and deceptive way.”
The outcry extended beyond industry commentators, with parents voicing their discontent on platforms like X.
Andrew Follett from Club For Growth shared his family’s decision, saying, “Wife and I have several young kids in the target age range. Never watching CoComelon again….there’s better kids content out there anyway!”
Similarly, Texas Freedom Coalition President Sarah Fields shared her broader frustration, commenting, “Nothing is wholesome anymore. Not even Cocomelon is off the table. I’m so fed up.”
On Common Sense Media, parents also expressed their outrage. One mother, Sky, expressed her exasperation, questioning, “Why? Why are they SO desperate all the time to ruin absolutely everything. So sad that nothing is safe for children anymore.”
Another parent bluntly advised, “Cocomelon lane is the woke spinoff of Cocomelon. Don’t waste your time.”
Despite the significant backlash, a segment of the audience applauded the show’s inclusivity. Some parents hailed the series for its diversity and even ridiculed the critics as “homophobic,” highlighting the deep divisions in perceptions of children’s entertainment.
Ann Lesby, PhD, who identifies as 1/8 Black, semitrans, lesbian who dates men, felt the clip did not go far enough stating on “X”, “Yes and…? Where are the trans lesbians of color? Typical cis gay supremacist propaganda.”
This controversy is part of a broader trend, with other shows like “Peppa Pig” introducing LGBTQ characters and Netflix Jr. facing backlash for a cartoon about nonbinary identities.
The recent reboot of “The Proud Family” on Disney also stirred controversy with an episode discussing slavery and reparations, further intensifying the debate over children’s content and the values it should reflect.
Netflix has not publicly addressed the issue, leaving the dialogue to continue among parents, advocacy groups, and commentators.
