The border crossings between the U.S. and Canada in southern Ontario are closed to all traffic following an explosion involving a vehicle that has left two people dead at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls.
According to a Canadian government source, two occupants of the vehicle are dead and a U.S. toll booth worker was injured.
According to the Niagara Gazette, a driver in a car reportedly sped up while going the wrong way and crashed into the inspection building.
Officers with the Niagara Falls Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol were at the scene of the incident, which occurred at 11:20 a.m., according to witnesses.
Two witnesses told the Gazette they heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion.
“We heard something smash,” Ivan Vitalii, a visitor from Ukraine, said. “We saw fire and big, black smoke.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she is aware of the incident in a social media update.
“I’ve been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist.
The FBI posted to X: The FBI in Buffalo is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the U.S. and Canada in Niagara Falls. The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in the investigation.
“As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the Rainbow Bridge is closed in both directions and Fort Erie Peace Bridge is closed as well. He said officials are in the process of closing Hwy. 405 and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge.
