In a significant move, Nikki Haley, the former U.N. Ambassador, has garnered the support of Americans for Prosperity Action, a group linked to the influential Koch brothers.
This endorsement, announced on Tuesday, signals a strategic shift, with the super PAC advocating for a new direction in American politics, away from the eras of Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Americans for Prosperity Action, known for its deep pockets and extensive grassroots connections, has been actively opposing Trump this year.
Their efforts include significant online ad campaigns and voter outreach in key primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina.
By backing Haley, the group is making a clear statement about the kind of leadership it wants to see in the Republican Party.
Haley, in response, tweeted her appreciation for the endorsement, framing the upcoming election as a choice between contrasting political values – freedom versus socialism, individual rights versus government control, and fiscal responsibility versus increasing national debt.
This endorsement from the Koch network is a big deal for Haley’s campaign, particularly in early voting states where she’s behind Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in terms of campaign organization.
The Koch network’s support means Haley will now have access to an effective direct-mail system, a team for door-to-door canvassing, and a group for making phone calls to potential voters. They are also expected to invest heavily in television ads for her campaign.
Another super PAC supporting Haley, Stand for America, has been focusing its efforts on criticizing DeSantis while avoiding any negative campaign against Trump, who has a commanding lead in the primaries.
The Koch network’s backing of Haley reflects its broader political philosophy, which is known for supporting the GOP establishment and aligning with more traditional Republican views.
However, the group’s positions on criminal justice reform and immigration have sometimes put it at odds with the party’s more hardline members.
Reacting to this endorsement, the DeSantis campaign released a statement that sarcastically “congratulated” Trump on the Koch’s support for Haley.
Andrew Romeo, the campaign’s Communications Director, suggested that the support for Haley might inadvertently help Trump, as they view Haley’s chances against Trump as limited.
“Congratulations to Donald Trump on securing the Koch endorsement. Like clockwork, the pro-open borders, pro-jail break bill establishment is lining up behind a moderate who has no mathematical pathway of defeating the former president. Every dollar spent on Nikki Haley’s candidacy should be reported as an in-kind to the Trump campaign. No one has a stronger record of beating the establishment than Ron DeSantis, and this time will be no different,” Romeo said.
This comment also attempts to position DeSantis as an outsider, different from the traditional Republican establishment that the Koch endorsement represents.
