Donald Trump speaks at North Carolina GOP State Convention

Former President Donald Trump will deliver a speech at the North Carolina GOP State Convention a day after he was federally indicted on criminal charges.

Trump will head to Greensboro, North Carolina, on Saturday to speak at the Koury Convention Center. Other featured speakers include GOP presidential candidates Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and former vice president Mike Pence.

North Carolina is expected to play a significant role in the 2024 election as a swing state. Ahead of the GOP speeches, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will be visiting the state on Friday.

The former president's speech will close the convention during the "Grand Old Party Dinner." It comes a day after the Justice Department unsealed a 37-count indictment with charges relating to conspiracy, withholding documents, and obstruction of justice.

Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to be indicted on federal criminal charges. Mishandling of classified government materials is a felony crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Obstruction of justice is also a felony, with a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

The former president's legal counsel said Trump will appear in court on June 13 at 3 p.m. at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
