André Ventura: The Rising Star of Portuguese Politics

Amy Mek   May 28, 2023

Ventura’s leadership draws praise from conservative leaders across Europe, making him a political star and symbol of the Portuguese sovereigntist and conservative right.

André Ventura, the leader of Portugal’s Chega party, is rapidly gaining prominence as a major political contender in the country. Despite founding his party in 2019, Ventura is already positioning himself as a potential leader in Portugal’s next presidential race. In an exclusive interview with Remix News, Ventura addresses crucial topics such as immigration, his party’s electoral prospects, and growing concerns over social media censorship.

Immigration and its Challenges

During the interview, the issue of immigration takes center stage. Ventura acknowledges the necessity of immigration for specific sectors, such as agriculture and tourism, which contribute significantly to Portugal’s economy. However, he raises concerns about the potential problems associated with uncontrolled and massive immigration, both legal and illegal.

Ventura points out that Portugal has recently experienced an influx of legal immigrants due to changes in citizenship and residency rules. He expresses apprehension over the automatic residence granted to citizens from Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Timor, and Guinea. He argues that this has resulted in an influx of criminal groups from Brazil and East Timor, posing security risks for the country.

He emphasized the need for border control and a balanced approach that supports those who genuinely need help while safeguarding Europe’s interests.

Challenges of Overpopulation and Youth Unemployment

Ventura highlights the challenges arising from overpopulation and its impact on housing and construction in Portugal. He cites instances where overcrowded living conditions are prevalent, with rooms or houses accommodating an excessive number of people. However, he also recognizes the significant role of tourism in the country’s economy and the need to create favorable conditions for its growth.

Regarding high youth unemployment rates, Ventura attributes the problem to the government’s approach of providing financial assistance without fostering employment opportunities. He believes that when individuals are incentivized to remain unemployed, it contributes to youth unemployment. Additionally, he notes the issue of emigration, as Portugal loses some of its brightest minds to other countries. He emphasizes the importance of creating conditions that discourage emigration while controlling immigration.

Security and Openness

Ventura expresses concerns about the lack of control over immigration and its potential security risks. He highlights an attack in Lisbon by an Afghan migrant, stating that the authorities had no prior knowledge of the attacker’s background due to inadequate control measures. He emphasizes the need for stricter border control to ensure the safety of the country and its citizens.

Electoral Prospects and Social Media Censorship

Ventura’s party, Chega, has experienced exponential growth and popularity. While Ventura aims to lead the next Portuguese government, he acknowledges the challenge of competing with other parties in the elections. He expresses confidence that his party will at least secure a place in a government coalition, if not leading it.

Discussing social media censorship, Ventura acknowledges that his party faces restrictions on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Although he does not delve into the details, he affirms that his team has alerted him to the issue. Despite potential obstacles, Ventura asserts that his party receives invitations from national media outlets and talk shows, which he selectively accepts to consolidate their positions domestically before venturing onto the international stage.

Political Star in Europe

As reported at RAIR Foundation USA, Ventura’s leadership has drawn praise from other conservative leaders across Europe. For example, at the Chega National Convention, Geert Wilders, the Dutch Party for Freedom leader, predicted that Ventura would become Portugal’s next Prime Minister. And Ventura’s commitment to national conservatism and the fight against globalism has resonated with other right-wing leaders, such as Tom Van Grieken of the Flemish party Vlaams Belang, who referred to themselves as “freedom fighters of the 21st century.”

Symbol of the Portuguese Right

It is not just Ventura’s political stances that have gained him attention. His strength, confidence, and charisma have also made him a standout figure in European politics. He is seen as the symbol of the Portuguese sovereigntist and conservative right, with an authentic, strong, and realistic public discourse that resonates with those who love their country.

Of course, Ventura and Chega also have their detractors, who criticize the party’s anti-illegal Immigrants, anti-sharia, and anti-Islamic supremacist stances, among other things. But there is no denying that Ventura is a political force to be reckoned with and that his rise to prominence is a sign of the growing strength of national conservatism in Europe.

Ventura and his party, Chega, are on the rise in Portugal and beyond. With a commitment to national conservatism and a strong anti-illegal immigration stance, Ventura has gained support from other conservative leaders across Europe. And with his strength, confidence, and charisma, he has become a symbol of the Portuguese right. Whether or not one agrees with his political stances, there is no denying that Ventura is a rising star in European politics.
