Police said a 16-year-old driver was "listening to a song about murder" Friday in St. Cloud, Minnesota, when he intentionally ran over a 70-year-old pedestrian who later died.
What are the details?
Officers answered a call of a car striking a pedestrian just after 8 p.m. and found the victim unresponsive, NBC News reported, citing a police news release.
Life-saving measures were performed on the victim — identified as Norbert John Olmscheid of St. Cloud — and he was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries, the network said, citing police.
Olmscheid had been “walking on a walking path prior to being struck by a vehicle driven by a 16-year-old male from Sauk Rapids,” police noted, according to NBC News.
The driver ran off but was later taken into custody, the network reported.
An investigation found that Israel Muyaya Madimba allegedly stole a vehicle from the St. Cloud YMCA just blocks away and soon saw the victim on the walking path between 9th Avenue and 6th Avenue North, authorities said, according to NBC News.
The suspect “admitted he drove on the walking path and intentionally struck the victim,” police said, according to the network.
The criminal complaint said the suspect told officers he turned onto the sidewalk and accelerated behind the victim, NBC News said: “The defendant admitted listening to a song about murder and then striking the unsuspecting victim."
Witnesses corroborated the suspect's account, the filing said, according to the network, which added that officials said an exact motive is still under investigation.
What happened to the suspect?
Madimba was taken to the Stearns County jail and then to a secure juvenile detention center, NBC News said.
Madimba appeared in district court Monday after being charged with first-degree and second-degree murder, the Stearns County Attorney's Office announced, according to the network.
The suspect was ordered held at $2 million unconditional or $1 million conditional bail, NBC News said, adding that the judge ordered a competency examination.
It's not immediately clear if Madimba has a lawyer.
The first-degree murder carries a life in prison sentence, the attorney's office said.
