Rex Murphy: Each Trudeau Liberal scandal is worse than the one before

China's election meddling follows a pattern: it is a new, larger scandal, which distracts from all the other bad Liberal behaviour

Naturally the still white-hot story of the Chinese government’s attempts to game two Canadian elections is chasing a lot of other news off the headlines. And it should. Of the multitudinous mischiefs, follies, absurdities and scandals of this tired, sloppy, incompetent and arrogant government this latest revelation has to be the top.

And that’s saying something. Mr. Trudeau’s attempts to dance around the plain and irresistible need for a full, weighty public inquiry — no Liberal connections, whatsoever, on whoever should is appointed to run it — are shameful. If a foreign government — and China at that — attempting to corrupt our elections, pressuring members of the Chinese diaspora doesn’t qualify for the fullest and most public examination, then ask yourself this question, what will?

But as I have observed before, and I will again, the Trudeau administration has perfected the most unlikely — even in some senses bizarre — method of crisis and scandal management. Should they get caught at some brazen impropriety — Trade Minister Mary Ng doling out federal funds to her “best friend” Amanda Alvaro will do as the freshest example, though there are so, so many more going back to the Trudeaus and Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan taking a vacation on the largesse of the Aga Khan in the very early days of this careless government — they simply dive into some other, even bigger mess.

The second mess swallows or obscures the first. Before the kettle has a chance to boil, before outrage reaches the level any given scandal deserves, there is a new one. “Oh, yes, we really fouled up there, left the old straight and narrow, but not to worry, we’re in an even deeper pit now.”

To this dynamic they have added a brilliant novelty. With the Trudeau ministers and with himself they treat being caught as proof “the system works,” and even more strangely as in itself some kind of weird exoneration. “Oh, dear, it appears I didn’t live up to my own high standards and impeccable moral compass. Well, this (getting caught) certainly is a good reminder that I didn’t and you can be sure I won’t take a vacation on foreign money, pass out $900 million via two Liberal-friendly brothers during Covid, farm out contracts to buddies, again.”

That’s the very process that’s going on now. The Chinese interference explosion dims the noise of so many other stories that in a normal time — and what is a normal time for this inept and reckless government? — would be owning the headlines and stirring the population. So yes, we need and everyone should demand that full and public inquiry into the outrageous actions of the Chinese government, and yes, there are absolutely no rational grounds, save protecting what little is left of this tattered government’s reputation, for one not to be held. None, at all.

As a by-thought to hear Jagmeet Singh temporize on whether this latest, huge scandal is enough for him to walk out of his self-serving and otherwise inexplicable deal to keep the Liberal ship afloat, is a separate outrage in itself. What’s to think about? A party leader who will let abuse by a foreign government of two Canadian elections go by without unshackling himself and his party from the government he supports, is not worthy of being a party leader.

Still from the government’s point of view, every murky, dismal, grey cloud has a silver lining. I think they manufacture clouds for just that reason. That feeble, inadequate inquiry into the imposition of the Emergencies Act — the savage upending of civil liberties, the raid on private bank accounts, the deliberate provocations of Mr. Trudeau himself which so inflated the “crisis” in Ottawa — is almost now just a memory.

The Emergencies Act blithely skated in under the shadow of the long term COVID crisis. The citizenry after two years of lockdowns, ridiculous and ever changing mandates, imposition of controls from every level of governments, the whole sweep of the COVID regime which swelled from “two weeks to slow the curve” to more than two years of terrible restrictions, were in just that state of shock and resignation to accept the erosion of civil liberties and the maligning of a genuine grassroots protest, which in clearer times would have had people in the streets day and night.

We need another inquiry, both into the Emergencies Act and the whole operation of the COVID regime. But once again, a “new” scandal shoves aside, and buries the slightly older one(s).

Ever changing gun ban rules. Killing the western oil industry. Turning down billions in foreign investment from allies like Germany and Japan, calling an opportunistic election during the plague — so much still on the “order paper” of public concern gets passed by.

This government is past its usefulness and has exhausted its slim stock of moral authority. It is stumbling and shabby and shallow, and consumed with only one thing: keeping the SS Liberal government which, under the dubious seamanship of Captains Jagmeet and Justin, is on the rocks and taking water, afloat for just another spell, while they figure out some bigger outrage to get past this latest, most outrageous example of — take your pick — their carelessness or dumbfounding incompetence.
