The Roxham Road irregular crossing at the border will be closing, according to a report.
Canada and the U.S. have agreed on a deal to close the busy crossing and the Trudeau government has agreed to allow entry for a certain number of migrants through official channels, Radio-Canada reported Thursday.
The report added that precise details are not yet known.
Roxham Road is on the Quebec-New York border, south of Montreal. The crossing has seen a significant uptick of asylum seekers in recent months.
Quebec Premier Francois Legault recently wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying his province is overwhelmed by the number of asylum seekers pouring across the border at Roxham. A total of 4,689 people entered Canada illegally at Roxham in December, which is more than arrived there in all of 2021.
It’s estimated at least 100 people enter this country at Roxham every day. According to federal government numbers, 39,000 people claimed asylum in Quebec after crossing at illegal border points in 2022.
American President Joe Biden arrives in Ottawa Thursday for his first official visit to Canada as president.
Radio-Canada said it wasn’t clear if the deal would be announced during Biden’s visit.
