After years of investigation, Florida Republican Representative Matt Gaetz will not be charged with a crime in connection with sex trafficking claims.
Wednesday, CNN was the first to disclose that the Justice Department had notified the counsel of one witness in the case that Gaetz would not be charged.

The decision not to prosecute the Florida Republican was taken at the department’s highest levels.
According to NBC News, Gaetz was accused of trafficking a 17-year-old in 2020, and the FBI took his cell phone.
A lawmaker’s buddy, Joel Greenberg, eventually pled guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor.
Last year, NBC News also reported that the investigation into Gaetz was related to allegations of interstate trafficking of a minor for prostitution and obstruction of justice.
Gaetz maintained his innocence during the entire proceeding.
CNN reported in 2021 federal investigators were “examining whether Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, including whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old girl and whether he paid for her to travel with him.”
Gaetz linked the claims to an effort at extortion.
“Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name,” he said.
“We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter, and my father has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals,” Gaetz added.
