Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said she has identified one of the "massive" reasons Republicans significantly underperformed in last month's midterm elections.
McDaniel said a "massive amount" of ticket-splitting was one of the top factors that led to GOP losses in some key races this election cycle despite winning in other races on the same ballot, speaking with John Catsimatidis on Cats Roundtable on the radio station WABC 77 on Sunday.
"Ticket-splitting was everywhere. We won eight races statewide in Georgia, but then Warnock wins the runoff. Ron Johnson wins in Wisconsin, but Evers holds the governorship," McDaniel said. "It’s not a one size fits all."
McDaniel also mentioned how the GOP cannot ignore abortion as a matter for voters, saying it gave Democrats an opportunity this past election.
"We’ve got to get conversant on that. It was probably a bigger factor than a lot of people thought. We can’t just do an ostrich method and pretend that it doesn’t exist when Democrats are spending $30 million on that message," McDaniel said. "In Pennsylvania and Michigan, that was a huge issue."
The chairwoman has recently been under intense scrutiny for her role in the GOP failures in the midterm elections as she runs for reelection. The RNC under her leadership recently received criticism through leaked emails showing members of the party were upset over the response to former President Donald Trump having dinner with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and rapper Kanye West at his Mar-a-Lago home in November.
McDaniel is being challenged for the RNC chair position by two people after Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) opted not to run, saying her reelection appears to be "pre-baked" by the RNC.
