Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly resigns amid criticism over handling of convoy protests

Ottawa’s police chief, Peter Sloly, has resigned, according to multiple media reports and Postmedia sources.

Toronto Sun political columnist Brian Lilley said Sloly has resigned, citing a senior source close to the situation. David Cochrane, senior Parliamentary reporter for CBC News, also said Sloly has resigned as Ottawa’s chief, adding that he will make the announcement after the Ottawa Police Services Board, according to sources that have spoken to CBC News.

His resignation comes amid a storm of criticism that police have been too lenient towards the protesters who set up camp in downtown Ottawa nearly three weeks ago.

Sloly had blamed a lack of resources for the Ottawa Police Service’s inaction and had requested 1800 additional officers and staff to be able to end the occupation of the streets around Parliament Hill.
