'You will not leave your apartment': Austria issues lockdown for unvaccinated citizens



COVID-19 lockdowns are returning to Austria, but only for the unvaccinated.

Beginning Monday, unvaccinated residents ages 12 and older will only be allowed to leave their homes to go to work or to purchase essential items. The lockdown is set to last 10 days and will not apply to those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 or have recently recovered from it, according to Reuters .

"In reality, we have told one-third of the population: You will not leave your apartment anymore apart from for certain reasons," Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said in a Sunday news conference. "That is a massive reduction in contacts between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated."

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer warned in the news conference that all interactions with the police will include checking people's vaccination status.

Anyone disobeying the lockdown can be fined up to €1,450 euros ($1,660), the outlet reported.

Beginning Monday, the lockdown will extend restrictions Austria introduced on Nov. 5 that banned residents unvaccinated against COVID-19 from attending restaurants, hotels, theaters, ski lifts, and other public venues, according to the outlet .

Of the roughly 8.9 million residents who live in Austria, approximately 5,982,560 have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose, while 5,302,903 residents are fully vaccinated, according to the World Health Organization.
