Democrat Katie Hill ordered to pay $200,000 in legal fees over her failed revenge porn case

Katie Hill, the California Democrat who resigned from Congress over leaked nonconsensual nude photos, was ordered to pay over $200,000 in legal fees to the Daily Mail and two conservative journalists she sued.

Hill has claimed that she was the victim of a right wing conspiracy to oust her from Congress. She resigned in 2019 over the allegations of an improper improper "throuple" relationship with one of her staffers. The controversy was first reported by Jennifer Van Laar, an editor at RedState.

Hill later sued the Daily Mail, Van Laar, and radio producer Joseph Messina, accusing them of violating California's "revenge porn" statute.

In April, L.A. County Superior Court Judge Yolanda Orozco sided against Hill and agreed that the publication of her nude photos were in the public interest.

"The facts of which these photos speak are about plaintiff's character, judgment and qualifications for her congressional position," Orozco said at the time. "Of course, these are matters of public concern."

Orozco has ordered Hill to pay $30,000 to the attorneys for Messina, $70,000 to the attorneys for Van Laar, and another $100,000 to the attorneys representing the Daily Mail.

Hill registered her outrage at the judgment on her social media account.

"A judge just ordered me to PAY the Daily Mail more than $100k for the privilege of them publishing nude photos of me obtained from an abuser. The justice system is broken for victims," Hill tweeted.

She had previously lashed out at the judge and implied that a jury would have sided with Hill instead.

"Today, we lost in court because a judge — not a jury — thinks revenge porn is free speech," Hill tweeted.

She vowed to appeal the judgments against her.
