Unborn life matters: Montana House passes bill against abortions

Montana House lawmakers on Thursday, March 18, proposed a pro-life amendment to the constitution that would recognize unborn babies as legal humans with fundamental civil rights.

According to Montana Public Radio, House Bill 337, introduced by state Rep. Caleb Hinkle (R-Belgrade), is one of the other multiple anti-abortion bills passing through the Legislature this year. In a 67-33 vote in the House, the bill passed the first round, it still needs to go through a second vote before becoming a law.

House Bill 337 will amend the Montana Constitution’s concept of an individual to fertilized eggs, zygotes, embryos, and fetuses and hence ensure them all legal rights born humans are entitled to. The state is aiming to make abortion unconstitutional.

The bill is being carried by Hinkle. “I firmly believe that life is the creation of something truly unique, something that individually, on a genetic level, has never happened before in the history of the world,” Hinkle proposed.

Since it proposes a citizen referendum to modify Montana’s Constitution to pass, HB 337 a majority of two-thirds of the entire Legislature is required. That means the bill would need the support of 33 senators, including two Democrats before it could be placed on the ballot.

Although this measure, as well as other anti-abortion legislation, is known to be off Democrats’ ideology, the Montana Constitution would be the state that defines existence starts at conception, and unborn children are individuals who are qualified for basic human rights if the amendment is passed.

“All members of mankind at any stage of development, beginning at the stage of fertilization or conception, regardless of age, health, level of functioning or condition of dependency,” the amendment defines all persons.

State Rep. Sharon Greef (R-Florence) defines the abortion laws as “holocaust,” which dismisses that personhood begins at conception.

Opponents of the legislation, Democrats in general, have been arguing that banning abortion is a way of disregarding women’s body rights.

State Rep. Alice Buckley (D-Bozeman) believes, “[It] would have sweeping restricting consequences on my ability to make decisions about my own body, my health, my safety, my security, my privacy, more so than anything else we’ve seen.”

The idea that human life starts at conception is respected by scientists, and not surprisingly several abortionists also acknowledge that they are murdering a human being.
