Director Michael Moore slammed Texas for its decision to reopen the state and remove its mask mandate in a series of tweets Wednesday, writing that the Lone Star State no longer needs “our precious vaccine.”
“Texas – we hear you. You didn’t want to be part of our electrical grid. And now you’ve removed your mask mandate & are allowing large crowds to gather. We hear you! COVID is a hoax! So u don’t need our precious vaccine. We’ll send it to ppl who are saving lives by wearing masks,” Moore wrote in a tweet that was quickly “ratioed” by a slew of responses calling the remarks insensitive.
“Yes, we must and will find a way to vaccinate the poor and people of color in Texas. To Texans who say, hey, it’s not me – it’s the Governor! Well, then, impeach and remove him. We’re tired of this. Don’t mess with Texas? Happy to oblige.”
The tweets come after Gov. Greg Abbott announced late Tuesday it was “time to reopen Texas 100 percent” and do away with a statewide mask mandate.
While flyover states like North Dakota, Montana and Iowa have also lifted mask orders in recent weeks, Texas is the largest and most populous state to do away with the mandate.
The move has drawn fierce criticism, including from the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
“I think we at the CDC have been very clear that now is not the time to release all restrictions,” Walensky said Wednesday during a briefing.
“The next month or two is really pivotal with how this pandemic goes as we scale up vaccinations, we really do need to decrease the amount of the virus that is circulating as we are trying to vaccinate all of the public.”
Moore later noted Houston is the first city in the country to record the presence of every new COVID-19 variant, which health officials have said arise from unfettered, rampant community transmission and pose a risk to the vaccine rollout.
Many criticized the “Bowling for Columbine” director for saying Texans don’t deserve the vaccine, regardless of whom they voted for. “The rest of us must find a way to protect ourselves from the policies and politicians of Texas,” Moore wrote.
“Millennial TX resident here and always vote blue. Give up on our leaders, not us please. A lot of us are mortified by this, and will keep doing all of the safety mitigation’s we have been since Mar 2020. We didn’t elect these ppl with out the help of heavy gerrymandering,” one person wrote.
“There are more Democrats in Texas than there are total populations in most states. You’re generally pretty idiotic and have recently tacked to a new career of being professionally and embarrassingly wrong, but this is a new level. Congrats!” another tweeted.
