Call it wokeness gone crazy. Actually, wokeness is crazy as you will see right here.
Americans have learned that Disney is slapping warning labels on Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and all their friends in The Muppets. The reason? You can’t make it up. Here’s Disney’s statement on just why they are airing “offensive content” disclaimers on the Disney + streaming service that will be airing episodes of The Muppets that first began appearing in 1976.
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
Got that? Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird and all the rest of the Muppet gang are the spitting image of those who spread “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures.”
Ahhh But there’s more to this Disney tale than meets the eye. Over on Fox and Friends, Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton pointed out exactly what that something else is.
It seems that Disney had chosen to film a live-action remake of the 1998 animated movie “Mulan.” The story revolves around a young Chinese woman who “impersonates a man to take her father’s place during a general conscription to counter a Hun invasion.”
The kicker? Disney had chosen to film the movie in China’s Xinjiang Province. That would be the very same Xinjiang Province where, per Fox, “Beijing is accused of human rights abuses against Uighur Muslim people.” Specifically, as noted by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Chinese government stands accused of committing “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” toward the Islamic minority.
Note this description of what is happening that appeared in the U.S. Sun:
“China has imprisoned more than one million people, including Uighurs and other mostly Muslim ethnic groups, in a vast network of concentration camps, according to US officials and human rights groups.
People have been subjected to torture, sterilization and political indoctrination in addition to forced labor as part of a brutal assimilation campaign in a region with a Han Chinese majority.”
So in other words? Disney is putting warnings in front of old episodes of The Muppets because Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang could blurt out some decided bit of non-wokeness that offends todays wokes.
But at the same time, it was just peachy and woke to film scenes in a live-action movie in China’s Xinjiang Province where actual human beings, not Muppets, are being placed in concentration camps and are “subjected to torture, sterilization and political indoctrination in addition to forced labor.” And when the movie came out, Disney made a point of thanking their hosts. Here’s the tale per National Review:
“In the credits of Disney’s new Mulan movie, the company offers a special thanks to four Chinese Communist Party propaganda departments and a public security bureau in the region of Xinjiang where more than a million Muslims, mostly of the Uyghur minority, have been imprisoned in concentration camps.
Disney recently revealed that some scenes in the live action remake of its 1998 animated film, which was released on its Disney+ streaming platform over the weekend, were filmed in the region.”
And nary a woke eyebrow is raised. But Kermit and Miss Piggy? No special thanks for them. Just a woke disclaimer.
Three cheers for Senator Cotton, who accurately said this was “a total Mickey Mouse move” by Disney that “is outrageous and appalling.”
Somewhere Uncle Walt is not pleased with what is being done in his name.
