Facebook removes accounts associated with QAnon conspiracy theory

Five pages, bearing titles such as @RealTrumpQAnon and @RealQAnon41020, with about 133,000 accounts following at least one them, were removed, Facebook said on Tuesday.

Twenty Facebook accounts and six groups were also taken down, according to the Hill.

QAnon is a far-right conspiracy theory that claims the government is run by a “deep state” that operates child sex trafficking rings and eats children, and proponents say President Trump is working to dismantle the system. The fringe movement has also pushed the conspiracy that Bill Gates developed the coronavirus to force mass vaccinations.

Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cyber security policy, said the removals happened because the accounts violated the company’s policies against coordinated inauthentic actions.

“From my perspective, we have a very clear behavioral line,” Gleicher said. “Whenever an actor crosses that line, we're going to take consistent enforcement.”

The company also removed pages affiliated with VDARE, an anti-immigration website that has links to white nationalist figures and has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Facebook also removed accounts sourced from other countries, including Russia and Iran.
