Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile won't say whether she believes Tara Reade, who accused former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual assault.
Brazile, a Fox News contributor who appeared Friday on the network's Daily Briefing with Dana Perino, was pushed on her support for Biden amid the allegation that he assaulted former Senate staffer Reade in 1993 when he was a Delaware senator.
Brazile, who joined Perino with former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, commended Biden on his interview early in the day with Morning Joe's Mika Brzezinski, calling it "straightforward." Brazile also said she felt Democrats have championed believing women coming forward in the last 30 years.
"We are talking about women who have come forward to tell their story," Brazile said. "To make sure that they are heard and respected. That is [why] Joe Biden requested that it be investigated. That she be believed, and that she be heard. I have heard from Tara Reade. I did not hear from Joe Biden. That's why I was grateful to hear from him today. She has already spoken."
When asked if she believed Reade, Brazile did not give a clear answer.
Brazile responded. "We've heard from her, but we respect women. The bottom line is you respect women."
Reade alleges Biden pushed her against a wall, kissed her, and penetrated her with his fingers in the summer of 1993. While no witnesses to the alleged assault have come forward, several people have confirmed Reade told them about the assault at the time.
Brazile was also asked on her thoughts over the allegations facing Biden earlier this week by Fox News host Bill Hemmer and said she has no insights and does not need to be lectured about sexual harassment and assault. She emphasized her stance that women should be able to come forward.
"Whether it’s what we heard during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, or what we heard during the Trump campaign, or what we heard about several other men, that we allow women to speak up and have their voices heard," she said.
Brazile has been a staunch supporter of the #MeToo movement and has expressed her support via social media for Biden.
