The 2020 U.S. Presidential race is in full boil, with odds shifting on a daily basis. Even though political betting is not offered at any legal or regulated sportsbook in the United States, the European counterparts to US sportsbooks have robust betting markets. While many factors go into those odds — including if big bets have come in — they are also a good indicator of where things stand. Bookies.com handicapper Dan Kilbridge takes a look at today's state of the race. Don't forget to bookmark this page so you can check back weekday mornings during the campaign!

Today's Takeaways

Biden Backs Up

Biden is still a major favorite to earn the Democratic nomination. He’s basically the only remaining candidate. But his odds dropped from -2000 to -1667 Thursday while Clinton improved to +800. This after Clinton endorsed Biden during a virtual town hall this week – which is EXACTLY what she’d want you to think if she were running a secret internal campaign. Or something like that.
The discrepancy is also apparent with the 2020 presidential election winning party odds. Biden remains a +125 underdog against Trump (-121) in November. The Republican Party has roughly the same odds to win the election at -118, but the Democratic Party odds improve to -110 in a wager that would leave the door open for another candidate to emerge before November.
Biden announced the members of his VP search committee Thursday morning as he looks to pick a running mate in early July. That will be the most important decision he makes all summer – the right choice could help bridge the gap with former Sanders supporters who aren’t sure if they’re ready to vote for Biden.

Poll Patrol

Trump is holding on to his -121 favorite status despite recent poll numbers – internal and external – that show Biden with significant leads in key swing states.
Several outlets have reported a growing frustration from Trump as a result. This also coincides with a move to scale back on daily marathon coronavirus task force media briefings. Trump sees the back-and-forth with media as a way to replace the unpredictable rallies he can no longer hold due to stay-at-home orders.

Trump also continues to dismiss long-term economic impact from coronavirus, touting big fourth quarter numbers and suggesting the virus will go away. Here’s an exchange from Trump’s Wednesday roundtable with industry executives:
Q: Without a vaccine, sir, why do you think the virus will just be gone?
Trump: “It’s gonna go. It’s gonna leave. It’s gonna be gone. It’s gonna be eradicated. It might take longer, it might be in smaller sections. It won’t be what we had and we also learned a lot.”
All the positivity might be working with his supporters for now, but the bill may come due in November. Unemployment numbers and death rates won’t magically drop on their own – it will take real work and some luck to get the hard data down by election time, at which point words can only do so much.

Up Next: Kansas Primary

Kansas is next on the state primary docket with a May 2 deadline for mail-in voting. It’s the first of three states set to go next month along with Oregon and Hawaii.
The political schedule is growing lighter by the day despite multiple states’ attempts to reopen nonessential businesses in the coming days. Both national party conventions are in jeopardy due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the Democrats postponing their planned July date. Republicans are pushing ahead on their National Convention in Charlotte and Dr. Anthony Fauci says he’s cautiously optimistic it could go on as planned Aug. 24-27.
