Where’s the logic in pushing “moderate” Biden over “radical” Sanders if Abrams is the VP?
If there’s one thing that has been a staple of the 2020 Democratic presidential circus, it’s a complete lack of consistent logic. So of course a high-profile effort to sell radical Georgia politician Stacey Abrams as Joe Biden’s VP would make perfect sense within a party of such maddening volatility.
Let’s recap. Dems, keenly spurred on by big-box media framing, rallied en masse around an aged linchpin of the Old Guard Establishment for the express purpose of not having a self-declared socialist, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as their nominee in a general election tilt against President Donald Trump. Now these same propaganda titans are amplifying the buzz to tab a staunchly leftist figure obsessed with racial grievance and the ugly divisiveness of identity politics to serve as No. 2 to that “safe and palatable” pick, even as Biden’s serious displays of cognitive decline make his choice of vice presidential nominee more important than it has been for perhaps any other candidate in modern American history. So much for sensible.
Antagonistic Abrams
Abrams, a former state representative, is best known for losing a close race for Georgia governor to Republican Brian Kemp in 2018. Heavily backed by progressive billionaires George Soros and Tom Steyer, Abrams constantly harped on racial issues throughout the campaign, something she has continued to do ever since in an unbroken pattern in her unelected position of “rising star” in the Dem ranks.
“I believe that African Americans and Native Americans are entitled to reparations,” Abrams told The Root in 2019. “We are the two communities who were legally disenfranchised from the inception of this country and we are the two communities who had legal structures that were put in place for such a long period of time that our ability to achieve and access opportunity at a level that was commensurate with the rest of America was just not available.”
Chosen to deliver the official Democratic response to Trump’s 2019 State of the Union address, Abrams again droned on about her favorite topic. “We fought Jim Crow with the civil rights act and the voting rights act,” she said in her remarks. “Yet we continue to confront racism from our past and in our present, which is why we must hold everyone from the highest offices to our own families accountable for racist words and deeds and call racism what it is, wrong.”
Isn’t this supposed to be everything Joe Biden wasn’t about, which is why he supposedly represented the most electable option against Trump in November? “Another round of Democratic voters registered their presidential preferences on Tuesday, sending a message strikingly similar to the one from Super Tuesday: They are tired of being scared, they are tired of being angry and they are not in the mood for a revolution,” wrote New York Times editorial board member Michelle Cottle on March 11, one day after Biden crushed Sanders in several state primaries.
Media Sweetheart
Yet many prominent outlets in an establishment media so clearly aligned with the Democratic Party have been unabashedly maneuvering the divisive Abrams into the forefront of the VP conversation now that their so-called Sensible Joe is the presumptive party nominee. Rolling Stone magazine is in outright schoolboy-crush mode over her. “Stacey Abrams Is Building a New Kind of Political Machine in the Deep South,” roared a headline atop a March 1 interview, which came before Biden’s resurrection. “Behind the scenes with the policy wonk, power broker, romance novelist, lawyer and entrepreneur who just might be our next vice president,” the subhead gushed. The mag conducted another equally adoring “exclusive interview” with Abrams on April 2, continuing to promote her after Biden’s rise. That’s the second exclusive in the span of a month, if you’re keeping score.
Abrams appeared on MSNBC Live on April 1 and openly welcomed the idea of being chosen to run alongside Biden. “I have not been in conversation with Vice President Biden, but I’m very honored to be considered,” Abrams said.
“I would absolutely answer the phone, and I would be happy to serve as a running mate, not only for the election, but also serve as a partner in an administration,” she continued, using a nationally televised media platform to further fuel speculation being advanced up to now mostly by this very same big-box media apparatus.
An interview for TBS’s Full Frontal With Samantha Bee has aired in recent days. Abrams also appeared on ABC News Prime on April 1, and she has sat down with numerous publications to discuss the U.S. Census in her designated role as get-out-the-leftist-vote maven for the Democratic Party. In short, she has been ubiquitous.
In another major-publicity appearance in February on ABC’s The View, Abrams was asked about her statements calling the Electoral College “a racist and classist system.” Abrams unleashed a hazy and incoherent explication peppered with that magic R word. “It’s a racist system that said we’re gonna count the bodies of black people but not their souls,” she declared while dismissing the Electoral College as an outdated relic of Slavery-Era America.
Bernie Sanders was considered too revolutionary by suddenly pragmatic Dems who decided to home in on the need to defeat Donald Trump as the chief party goal for 2020. How exactly is attaching a Soros-backed radical who considers reparations for black Americans and abolishing the Electoral College to be two of the most vital issues affecting the nation today to a Joe Biden ticket going to help Dems advance the professed “moderate” sensibilities the party was spouting in lockstep voice only a couple of weeks ago? When it comes to fickle and malleable Dems, perhaps it’s best not to ponder it all too much.
