‘Thrill-seeking’ teacher busted for defecating ‘multiple times per day’ in public park

Today they learned he’s also been copping a squat at the Natureland Park in the town of Whitewater, where he left his mark on a park building up to five days a week for the last two years, sometimes multiple times per day, The Gazette reports.
“I’m so disappointed in myself. I have the great opportunity to teach ‘Political Rhetoric.’ … In this class, I stress the importance of involved citizenship. And then there I am being a lousy citizen of Walworth County,” Chruchwell wrote in an October apology email to the sheriff’s deputy who cracked the case.
“My hypocrisy now sickens me.”
For more than two years, county Public Works Department employees made a ritual of cleaning up the feces left outside of and on a building at the park, a problem that drew numerous public complaints and forced workers to pressure wash the building and repair the paint. On Oct. 8, a sheriff’s deputy met with county worker Brent Brooks to file a criminal complaint and collect pictures of the culprit taken from trail cameras. The evidence included a partial license plate number for a gray Chevy Malibu parked nearby during the incidents, which led officials to Churchwell, according to the news site.
The same day, the deputy spotted Churchwell’s vehicle and stopped the teacher as he entered the park for his second deposit of the day.
The Gazette secured the police reports from the investigation through a public information request and detailed how the bust went down.
“Churchwell told officers he didn’t know why he was being stopped, but when asked if it would help if the officers had photos of him doing anything, he hung his head and said ‘going to the bathroom,’ according to the reports” cited by The Gazette.
“When asked what ‘going to the bathroom meant’ and if it was in a park bathroom, Churchwell said ‘a No. 2’ by the park building without a bathroom. Churchwell said he didn’t know if he had defecated on the building, according to the reports.”
Churchwell told police he runs in the park and changes in the bathroom and admitted to “being an idiot” by defecating daily at the site for over a year. The day after he was busted, Churchwell wrote to the arresting deputy in an attempt to keep his embarrassing habit under wraps.

The English teacher, who worked in the Milton School District for three decades, said the thrill of pooping in public got the best of him. He also said he shat on the park to be disrespectful, and for the convenience.
“As well, after REALLY thinking about why I did what I did, I came to the conclusion that I allowed by thrill-seeking, self-indulgent pride and ego both get the best of me,” he wrote, according to The Gazette. “For that, I am truly ashamed. If the thousand students who – for some reason – respect me and my efforts here … were to discover my flaw?? Well, it wouldn’t be good.”
On Thursday, the Associated Press picked up the story for its national news wire.
Churchwell was ultimately cited for disorderly conduct, fined $365, and ordered to pay $5,705 in restitution to the Public Works Department for dealing with his stuff.
Last month, the disgraced educator decided it was a good time to retire and the school board approved the move on Dec. 18.
Churchwell’s retirement is effective Jan. 16, giving him plenty of time to discuss the lessons he learned with his students.
