Actor Jussie Smollett has become one of the most reviled men in America, particularly when it comes to the subject of race relations in this great nation.
Smollett, who was famous for his role on the popular television show Empire, earned that sour reputation after hoaxing a hate crime against himself – according to Chicago Police. The incident, in which two extras from the set of Empire were paid to attack Smollett while shouting racial epithets and brandishing a noose, was quickly outed by Windy City authorities, making Smollett a persona non grata all over Chi-Town and America.
Then, the unthinkable occurred: Smollett’s case was dismissed by authorities high above Chicago PD in a move that reeked of special, celebrity treatment.
This egregious development then prompted the appointment of a special prosecutor to oversee the case, and to determine whether or not the earlier dismissal was at all warranted. A judge has now ordered Google to turn over Smollett’s emails, in an effort to prove that the actor coordinated the attack himself.
A judge has ordered Google to turn over a year’s worth of Jussie Smollett’s emails, private messages, photographs and location data to a special prosecutor who is looking into why prosecutors abruptly dismissed criminal charges against the actor.
On Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported that it had obtained two search warrants submitted by special prosecutor Dan Webb and signed off by Cook County Judge Michael Toomin last month.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office filed and quickly dropped 16 counts of disorderly conduct against Smollett for allegedly staging a January 2019 attack in downtown Chicago and lying about it to police. Toomin appointed Webb months later and the warrants offer the first public hints about what he has been investigating.
There appears to be little hope for Smollett’s name to be cleared in the matter, with a vast majority of Americans having already made up their mind on the issue.
This latest ruling certainly doesn’t appear to be in Smollett’s favor either.
